Gemini and Nano Banana images: remove the metadata, understand the watermark.

Google marks images from its AI models with an invisible SynthID watermark, and Nano Banana Pro images also carry C2PA metadata. See what your file contains and remove the metadata in your browser.

What Google adds to Gemini images

SignalWhere it appliesRemoved by this tool
SynthID watermarkContent from Google's AI models; Google says over 20 billion pieces of content have been watermarked (Google, November 2025)No, it is in the pixels
C2PA Content CredentialsImages generated by Nano Banana Pro (Gemini 3 Pro Image) in the Gemini app, Vertex AI and Google Ads (Google)Yes
Visible watermarkThe small mark on Gemini images; reported in August 2026 to be optional in settings in many countries, with SynthID and C2PA still applied (Search Engine Journal)No, it is part of the picture

Because coverage depends on the model and the product, two Gemini images can carry different metadata. Drop yours in to see exactly what it has.

    How the watermark behaves

Google says the SynthID watermark "will usually still exist even if the image, video, or audio is re-scaled, re-colored, compressed or altered in other ways" (Gemini Help). That is the point of a watermark: unlike metadata, it is designed to survive ordinary edits. Removing metadata does not affect it, and neither does converting the file or taking a screenshot.

The Gemini app can check images for SynthID and, at gemini.google.com and in the Android app, for Content Credentials (Gemini Help). Google notes that Gemini "can currently only recognize content created by Google AI tools", so a negative result there says nothing about other generators.

    Check and remove the metadata

    1. Drop the image downloaded from Gemini, AI Studio or Vertex AI. It never leaves your browser.
    2. Read the report: a C2PA manifest, an IPTC AI source flag, and any tool names mentioned.
    3. Download the cleaned copy. Pixels are identical; only the metadata is gone.

    Veo videos

Google applies SynthID to video made with Veo, as part of the same program that covers its images and audio. In a video the watermark is carried in the frames. Our video metadata remover removes metadata boxes from MP4 and MOV files and copies every video and audio packet unchanged. That keeps your video's quality intact, and it also means the watermark is left exactly as it was.

What this does and doesn't change

    • Cleared: C2PA and IPTC metadata, which Meta and TikTok describe reading for their AI labels.
    • Not cleared: SynthID, which Google's own tools, and any platform that chooses to check, can still detect.
    • Not changed: the image itself, and any obligation to disclose AI content on the platform where you post.

Gemini is also used to edit real photos. If you edit your own photo with a Google AI tool, Google may watermark the result too: it applies SynthID to images edited with Reimagine in Google Photos, for example (Google). For photos that were labeled after AI editing, see why real photos get labeled as AI.

Use it honestly. An image generated by Gemini keeps its SynthID watermark after cleaning. Disclose AI images where platforms or your audience expect it.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Nano Banana the same as Gemini?

Nano Banana is the name used for Gemini's image models. Google says images generated by Nano Banana Pro, which is Gemini 3 Pro Image, carry C2PA metadata in the Gemini app, Vertex AI and Google Ads.

Does converting a Gemini image to JPG remove SynthID?

No. Google says the watermark usually survives re-scaling, re-coloring and compression. Converting the format can drop metadata, but not the watermark.

Do Veo videos have a watermark?

Yes. Google applies SynthID to video made with Veo. It is carried in the frames, so metadata removal leaves it in place.

    Do Gemini images have metadata?

Google embeds a SynthID watermark in content from its AI models, and images generated by Nano Banana Pro in the Gemini app, Vertex AI and Google Ads also carry C2PA metadata.

Can you remove SynthID from a Gemini image?

Not with this tool. SynthID is woven into the pixels, and Google designed it to survive resizing, recoloring and compression.

Does removing the metadata remove the visible watermark?

No. A visible mark is part of the picture. This tool never alters image data.

Can Gemini tell if an image is AI-generated?

The Gemini app can check for Google's SynthID watermark, and in some versions for Content Credentials. It can only recognize content made with Google AI tools.
