TikTok AI-generated label: what triggers it and what you can remove.

TikTok auto-labels uploads that carry C2PA Content Credentials. Check whether your video or photo has them, see what else is in the file, and remove it in your browser before you upload.

The two kinds of AI label on TikTok

    What TikTok requires

In May 2024 TikTok said it had required creators to label realistic AI-generated content for over a year (TikTok). Its Creator Academy adds three points worth knowing before you post (TikTok Creator Academy, updated September 2026):

    • Turning on the AI-generated content setting "won't affect the distribution of your video" as long as it follows the Community Guidelines.
    • You cannot edit or remove the label after posting.
    • TikTok may take down AI-generated content that is not labeled.

So for realistic AI content, labeling it is both the rule and, according to TikTok, free of any reach penalty. Metadata removal is for a different problem: files that carry Content Credentials you didn't intend to publish, such as real footage that passed through an app that adds a manifest, or videos you want to share without location and device details.

Check a video before you upload

    1. Drop the MP4 or MOV, or the photo, you plan to upload. Nothing is sent anywhere.
    2. Look for a C2PA line in the report. In MP4 and MOV files the manifest sits in a top-level uuid box; the report also lists XMP, location tags, timestamps and the names of the apps that exported the clip.
    3. Download the cleaned file. Video and audio packets are copied without re-encoding, and the file stays the same size, so TikTok receives exactly the same picture and sound.

    When you should label instead

If your video is realistic AI-generated content, use TikTok's AI-generated content setting when you post. Viewers then see "Creator labeled as AI-generated" below your caption (TikTok Creator Academy). TikTok describes this as a transparency tool, not a reach penalty, and since November 2025 it also lets viewers tune how much AI-generated content they see in their feed. TikTok says that setting is meant to help people tailor their feed "rather than removing or replacing content" (TikTok newsroom).

Cleaning a file and labeling a post are not alternatives to each other. You can upload a cleaned file that contains no location or device data and still label the post honestly.

    What stays even after cleaning

    • TikTok's own invisible watermark. In November 2025 TikTok announced "a robust technological watermark that only we can read" (TikTok newsroom). A watermark in the picture is not metadata, and this tool does not touch the frames.
    • Watermarks from AI video models. Google applies SynthID to video made with Veo, and that survives metadata removal too. See SynthID explained.
    • Labels already on a posted video. Cleaning a file only affects what you upload next.

TikTok also said in 2024 that it would start attaching Content Credentials to TikTok content, which would stay on the file when downloaded (TikTok). If you download your own TikTok videos to post elsewhere, it is worth checking them here first; for more on video files, see the video metadata remover.

Use it honestly. If a video is AI-generated and realistic, TikTok requires a label and may remove unlabeled content. Removing metadata does not exempt you from that rule.

    Frequently asked questions

Does TikTok add its own watermark to AI content?

TikTok announced in November 2025 an invisible watermark that only TikTok can read. It is not metadata, so cleaning a file does not affect it.

Can TikTok remove AI videos that aren't labeled?

Yes. TikTok's Creator Academy says it may take down AI-generated content that is not labeled.

Why did TikTok label my video as AI-generated?

Either you used a TikTok AI effect, or the uploaded file carried C2PA Content Credentials, which TikTok reads to auto-label content. Drop the file in above to see whether it has a manifest.

Can I remove the AI label after posting?

TikTok says creators cannot edit or remove the label after posting. Cleaning a file only affects new uploads.

Does labeling a video as AI reduce views?

TikTok says turning on the AI-generated content setting will not affect distribution as long as the video follows the Community Guidelines.

Does cleaning a video lower its quality?

No. The video and audio streams are not re-encoded. Only metadata boxes are blanked, so the file stays the same size.
